CALLING MEN TO LEAD
During family worship time at campmeeting the other week I played the role of Detective Burnett (that's with two "T's" not one) who was assigned by the International Association of the National Associated to investigate if Jesus was only for girls.
An emerging thought is that God revealed Himself in the Old Testament as a parent would to a young child, but as we (God's people) matured over time He was able to reveal, as it were, His more true self in the New Testament.  The OT picture being a God that commands, that conquers, and that kills.  The NT revelation maybe being best summarized in "love your enemy" or "turn the other cheek." The immediate problem is that is discredits what I read about God in the OT, demoting it below what I read in the NT.  Our  "OT God" must fully be Himself, or we are contradicting our claims to the entirety of Scripture.  Without taking another step, I should say that it is cogent that God is emotional and has made love the most powerful of agents - and He has invited us to be participants in both of these.
But there is something beyond theology that has troubled me.  Twice this week I have dealt with situations where I was looking to hold a man accountable and to challenge him and a woman (wife) finished the conversation for him actually covering for him.  This is not good.
At the risk of generalizing and sounding like a male chauvinist, some women who in their intention to be in their God-given place (next to man) overstep their bounds. It is wrong for men to see women for only procreation and pleasure. Men need women for all the beautiful and wonderful things that make a woman.    The negative affect is equal.   Women, you need men for more than procreation and pleasure (actually heard this recently from a woman).  Let us lead in being patriotic, protective, and committed.

Reading your blog reminded me of a conversation I had with my good friend Chuck Holtry several years back. Like the big brother he is, he shared with me the importance of letting the guys lead. I've never forgotten what he said nor the impact it has had on me as I have worked with many men in the years since. Being the natural leader I am, I must constantly remind myself that my role is to encourage the men to lead and to support them in that. I only wish more men would recognize that this is God's calling for them. So I appreciate knowing that you believe this - and live it!

Very well though & said (typed) Micheal! I believe however there are two sides to the story...both parties need to realize the need & role of the other party. This world makes this process challenging yet not impossible. Thanks for sharing...I did enjoy the pic of your detective role...I don't quite understand the purpose of the investigation? Who would think that Jesus is only for girls? Do explain...

Karlee- Det. Burnett appreciates your affirmation.
And we can thank Linda McCabe that there was photo evidence.

Staci-You have a very good thought - that even as a born woman leader you don't have to squelch that to support a man's leadership.

Elizabeth - balance... yes I suppose you are very right. There is a question in Christianity if we have "tamed" Jesus down to much... both in pictures and in theology. So he is always gentle and encouraging us to get in small groups and share our feelings. In Christianity the girl population outweighs the boy significantly.

Guys tend to be more action oriented, adventure oriented - the world caters to this in many forms-it draws men away. I tend to agree that there is a point that the perception of what a Christian is can become too (I want to say docile but looking at Webster I'm reluctant)...ah, demure. I don't think all those tendencies are from the Bible alone - there is plenty of such perspectives in the world, a push to demasculinize. That can create a neutered sensation in mind and spirit...which isn't a sensation a guy naturally gravitates towards but can be a circular problem once it occurs. I think the only way to effectively break that circle is by what Stacie brought out, women (especially wives) and the church as a whole making a conscious choice to encourage and support and I'd add: deferring/ requiring action or a decision/accountability. and There is plenty of wisdom in the old adage: Behind every man is a woman.
